car brakes at Autocar

Good brakes are an important part of any vehicle and they therefore need to be kept in a good working order and checked on a regular basis. At Autocar we will be happy to check your brakes for you and suggest if they are due to be replaced or not.

Brake Discs and Pads

Discs and Pads Most modern vehicles have discs and pads on the front and rear as this offer greater braking efficiency over shoes and drums. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake fluid pushes the pistons within the brake caliper onto the brake pads which in turn press against the rotating brake disc causing friction, which results in the vehicle slowing down.

Brake Shoes and Drums

Older vehicle and some newer, smaller engined or commercial vehicles may be fitted with shoes and drums on the rear. These work in a similar way to disc and pads; as the brake pedal is pressed, the brake fluid pushes the brake pistons out which inturn pushes the shoes against the inside of the drums, causing friction and slowing the vehicle.

Hand / Parking Brakes

Your hand / parking brake is used to hold the vehicle when not in use. This simply works by the handle pulling caples which link to the rear brakes, causing pressure to be applied and holding the vehicle in place (Although some modern cars now have electronic hand / parking brakes). A faulty hand / parking brake, worn cables or brake issues as mentioned below can all cause your hand / parking brake to not hold the vehicle enough, increasing the chances of your vehicle rolling, especially when parked on an incline.

Braking Performance

It is very important that your brakes are working as well as possible, but there are a number of factors that can reduce your braking performance. These include the pads or shoes being worn, the discs or drums being worn or corroded, the pistions have become seized within the caliper or the brake fluid is old or has been contaminated with air, dirt or moisture.

If you have any concerns about your brakes and their performance, it is vital that you get them check immediately.
